With J.J. Abrams vacating the director's chair on the third Star Trek film in the reboot series to helm another sci-fi movie in a galaxy far, far away, Paramount Pictures was searching for a new captain behind the camera, one who could oversee the USS Enterprise and its eclectic crew on their next voyage. After over two weeks of speculation following the confirmation that Roberto Orci will not helm the next Star Trek film, Paramount has selected a director.

Deadline reports that Justin Lin has been set to direct Star Trek 3. Perhaps best known for directing four installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise—The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6—Lin is also slated to direct a Jeremy Renner-starring Bourne film and will take the reigns on the first two episodes of True Detective's second season.

No official casting, story, or release details for Star Trek 3 are known at this time, but it's been rumored that the third entry will take the Enterprise's crew into deep space. The Star Trek franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016 and it's believed that the next movie will come out that same year, hopefully giving fans a memorable onscreen anniversary gift. It's likely that the third entry in the reboot film series will see the return of cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and Alice Eve.
