Madagascar 3 and Prometheus were able to keep the top two spots this weekend and hold off newcomers Rock of Ages and That's My Boy. Prometheus was front loaded, so although it continues to make decent money in its second week, it was down 60.4% from its opening weekend.
Last week, we talked about the possibility of a Prometheus sequel based on other Fox genre films that recently had a sequel greenlit. Looking at Rise of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men First Class, we think Prometheus needs to cross $350 million worldwide at the box office. It's current worldwide total is $217 million and it's running a little bit behind where X-Men First Class was at its two week mark. International sales will make up for more than 50% of the worldwide gross, so that's what we'll need to keep an eye on over the next month.
It's been a little bit since we talked about The Avengers, so let's see where this box office juggernaut is 6+ weeks after its release. As expected, other summer movies prevented The Avengers from dominating the box office as long as Avatar did. We're unlikely to see it pass the domestic unadjusted record held by Avatar and Titanic, but we don't think they are complaining about being number three. There's also a rumor of an extended theatrical re-release of The Avengers planned for later this year, so that could make up the difference.
Next week's wide releases are Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Brave, and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Here are the top 10 box office results for this weekend:
