Pacific Rim was part of the Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. panel at Comic-Con, and Guillermo del Toro showed off the first footage from the film at the event. While that footage was for those who attended the panel only, we do have video of the entire Q&A session, where del Toro talks quite a bit about what we can expect from the movie.

Overall, I was impressed with the footage that was shown. As Guillermo del Toro mentioned during the panel, they only finished filming 12 weeks ago, so what we saw was a rough version of the film and CG. The look of the movie is similar to Hellboy II in that it's colorful and doesn't seem to be going for an ultra realistic take on the material. However, it seems like this will be a treat to anyone who is a fan of Kaiju films and anime that wants to see this kind of material done on a large live-action scale.

Guillermo del Toro says that there will be 9 different types of monsters, with 6 or 7 robots. Each of the robots and monsters will have unique abilities, and there will be "giant robot weapons", such as melee weapons and artillery. The footage did include a number of quick fight clips, where we saw Jaegers doing battle with the Kaiju, as well as Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman operating their own Jaeger.

We're not expected to see a trailer until late this year or early next year, so the general public will have a bit of a wait before the marketing push begins and we see more of the movie. Until then, check out the panel below if you're interested for more details on how the humans operate the robots and comments from the cast.

“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.”

Pacific Rim will be released to theaters on July 12th, 2013. To see the first poster, visit our recent coverage at: http://dailydead.com/new-photo-from-guillermo-del-toros-pacific-rim/
