This is the year horror fans return to Derry, Maine in New Line Cinema's IT movie. Due out in September, the latest adaptation of Stephen King's seminal 1986 novel is highly anticipated, and in a recent interview with Collider, producer Dan Lin confirmed that the film will have an "R" rating, and he also briefly discussed the movie's potential sequel.
When asked by Collider's Steve Weintraub at the press event for The LEGO Batman Movie if the new IT movie will be rated R, Lin confirmed the rating:
"It is a rated-R movie... It is a scary clown that’s trying to kill kids. So of course that’s going to be a rated-R movie... They do have a scary crown that’s taken over the town of Derry, so it’s going to be rated R."
Lin also mentioned that the film's young cast, which includes Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things, instill the characters of The Losers' Club with a "Stand by Me vibe." When Weintraub inquired about a potential sequel following The Losers' Club returning to Derry as adults, Lin had this to say:
"Naturally, that's the plan... it's the part of the book that we have not yet explored... The first part is this movie, and if audiences react to this movie in the way we hope they will, and I think they will, then we'll be able to tell the adult story as well."
The first IT movie is scheduled for a September 8th, 2017 release from Warner Bros. Set in the 1980s (as opposed to the book's 1950s setting for the chapters on the kids), the film stars Wolfhard as Richie Tozier, Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Uris, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon. They will go up against an ancient evil known as IT (Bill Skarsgård), who appears as Pennywise the clown (among other horrifying identities) and preys on the darkest fears of Derry's residents.
Andrés Muschietti (Mama) directs IT from a screenplay he wrote with Gary Doberman. Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, and David Katzenberg are on board as producers, with Jon Silk executive producing the project.
