Weekend Box Office Update

Brave took the top spot this weekend, earning an estimated $66.7 million. It wasn't much of a surprise given that it was coming from Pixar, who has opened big and won the first weekend with their last 12 films.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter placed third with a disappointing $16.5 million. Since it only had a production budget of $69 million, this won't be considered a total flop, but Fox was hoping for a $20 million+ opening. With a mixed to poor critical response and a similar audience reaction, it's unlikely to have strong sales in the coming weeks.

We've been tracking Prometheus since it opened, to let you know if we're likely to see a sequel. While Prometheus just passed the $100 million mark in the US, international sales are starting to slow down. With competition from new genre films, including The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises in July, we're not sure that Prometheus will be able to cross $350 million as a worldwide total. For more information on why we believe it needs to cross that mark, visit our earlier coverage.

Next week's wide releases include Ted, Magic Mike, People Like Us, and Madea's Witness Protection. Here are the top 10 results for this weekend:

1. Brave - $66,739,000
2. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - $20,200,000
3. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - $16,500,000
4. Prometheus - $10,000,000
5. Snow White and the Huntsman - $8,000,000
6. Rock of Ages - $8,000,000
7. That’s My Boy - $7,900,000
8. The Avengers - $7,040,000
9. Men in Black 3 - $5,600,000
10. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - $3,836,000
