Last year it was announced that David S. Goyer was producing and writing a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (which is based on his novella The Hellbound Heart), and now it's been revealed that David Bruckner has been summoned to direct the film, with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski coming aboard to write the screenplay.
The latest Hellraiser news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who reveal that Goyer is still involved as a producer (as well as Keith Levine) and is writing the story for the film, so it looks like Goyer will still have creative input on the screenplay by Collins and Piotrowski.
The new Hellraiser movie is coming from Spyglass Media, a collaboration between Gary Barber and Lantern Entertainment's Andy Mitchell and Milos Brajovic. As THR notes, Spyglass is also the company behind the upcoming Scream movie.
As previously noted by Daily Dead Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James, Gary Barber's relationship with Clive Barker should leave fans optimistic that Barker will help creatively steer the film:
“Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative ‘Hellraiser’ haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of ‘Hellraiser.’”
Bruckner, Collins, and Piotrowski recently teamed up for The Night House, which was acquired by Searchlight Pictures following its well-received premiere at Sundance. Collins and Piotrowski wrote the screenplay for The Sisters of Samhain, an upcoming Halloween-set film that will be directed by Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead).
Last year it was announced that a Hellraiser TV series is in development from producers Roy Lee and Dan Farah, so we could see multiple takes on Barker's iconic creation.
Further details on the new Hellraiser movie, including casting and plot information, have yet to be revealed, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated when more news is summoned from the Lament Configuration.
