Weekend Box Office Update

The Expendables 2 easily won the weekend with $28.7 million. This total is just slightly lower than the first film's opening at $34.8 million, but The Expendables 2 is facing more competition from other action films in the top 10. The Bourne Legacy took second place with $17 million and has earned nearly $70 million since opening last week.

ParaNorman earned $14 million in its opening weekend, but we wouldn't consider that a disappointment for an original stop-motion animated film. This opening is similar to Laika's earlier film, Coraline, which earned $16 million in its first weekend and had a healthy box office performance in the following weeks.

Next Friday see the release of The Apparition, although it seems that the film will only have theatrical run in around 800 theaters. We'll be looking into this a bit more during the week to update readers who are interested in seeing it in their area. Premium Rush and Hit & Run are also opening, although they will have scaled back theatrical releases as well. This should make for low box office results next week, but will give this weekend's new films a chance to earn more. Here are the top 10 results for this weekend:

1. The Expendables 2 - $28,750,000
2. The Bourne Legacy - $17,020,000
3. ParaNorman - $14,008,000
4. The Campaign - $13,385,000
5. Sparkle - $12,000,00
6. The Dark Knight Rises - $11,140,000
7. The Odd Life of Timothy Green - $10,909,000
8. Hope Springs - $9,100,000
9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days $3,850,000
10. Total Recall - $3,500,000
